Historie znad Mekongu - Vu Images
Laos, Champassak, June 23, 2009 A fiery and generous river, a vital channel for a landlocked country. The Mekong is Laos' spinal column, spanning 1,160 miles (1865 km). For this mountainous, landlocked country, with no access to the sea and poor road infrastructure, the river and its tributaries constitute a principal communication channel. Two thirds of Laos' population is concentrated on the Great River's lowlands, which is the major part of the country's land suitable for cultivation, dedicated mostly to rice farming. With 5.5 million inhabitants, Laos has a relatively low population-density (about 62 inhabitants per square mile), scattered along the river and in small clusters in the highlands.
