Greater flamingo pair. NETHERLAND ENCHANTING images of two Greater flamingos flirting and courting each other have been captured. Images show the two in-love birds leaning into each other and showing great affection and tenderness, forming a perfect hear-shape with their beaks and necks. Greater flamingos have a pinkish-white plumage, with red wing coverts and contrasting black primary and secondary flight feathers. They are the most widespread and largest species of the flamingo family. To court females, male flamingos perform ritualized stretching and preening, involving synchronized walking and simultaneous head movements. The female selects the most impressive male as their mate. They form a very strong bond and may be monogamous. However, flamingos have been observed to mate with more than one partner. These beautiful images were snapped in Grevelingenmeer in the south of the Netherlands, by Anna Stelloo (52) a doctor’s assistant and a wildlife photographer from Hoorn, the Netherlands. “I was fascinated by the way the couple flirted and danced with each other and also the unique way they moved their necks,” she told mediadrumworld.com. “I was aware that in winter time there was a possibility the flamingos flocking in the area so I took out my camera and went to photograph them. “It was a very romantic experience, witnessing these beautiful birds engaged in courtship and pairing off and kissing and flirting with each other, it was very touching.” ENDS.
