20th June 2011, Meerut: Pawan Kumar (48), an aspiring hangman who has applied for government certification in the role, pictured in front of the residential housing complex in which he lives his in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is the son of recently deceased Mammu Singh, one of India's last official hangmen who died on the 19th May 2011. Kumar has answered India's call for an official hangman as there is currently a shortage of qualified hangmen in the country. In May, India's president unexpectedly rejected a last-chance mercy petition from a convicted murderer in the Himalayan state of Assam. Having no hangman in the state, prison officials were compelled to issue a nationwide call for a hangman and Kumar put himself forward 10 days after his fathers death, he now awaits certification as a hangman. If certified Kumar will be a the fourth generation of men to hold the post in his family and its possible that he could be called upon to execute Ajmal Kasab the sole surviving gunman from the Mumbai attacks in 2008 who has lodged an appeal against his death sentence by hanging. ?
