Leopard flees from wild dogs, tables turned. AFRICA EXHILARATING images of a leopard being sent packing by wild dogs have been captured. Images show the pack of African wild dogs being taken aback when a cheeky leopard tries to steal their kill. Only for them to re-group and attack the leopard, sending it off with its tail between its legs. African Wild dogs, sometimes confused with hyenas, hunt in packs, driving their prey to exhaustion and consuming it quickly. Packs consisting of two to 27 wild dogs, centre on a dominant breeding pair. They typically hunt medium-sized prey such as antelopes and impala. Away from the den, the packs are constantly on the move, covering large areas and aiming to steer clear of lions and spotted hyenas, their great competitors. The thrilling encounter happened in the Okavango Delta, Botswana and was captured by photographer Shannon Wild. “The action happened so fast that I wasn’t sure I’d managed to keep both the leopard and wild dogs in a frame,” she told mediadrumworld.com. “I was thrilled to see the intensity of the leopard’s expression in the shots as it was being chased and bitten by the dogs. “The combination of shock, pain, and surprise is all right there on its face.” “Initially, the four wild dogs chased a Kudu, a species of antelope, and killed it. “While the dogs were feasting on their hunt a leopard emerged out of nowhere and tried to claim the kill for itself. “For a moment the dogs scattered, allowing the leopard to grab the carcass and drag it towards a nearby tree. “But then the dogs regrouped and launched a coordinated attack, chasing the leopard off. “It escaped up the tree, but the kill was too tempting, and it tried and failed again to steal it back. “In the end, the leopard watched helplessly from the safety of the branches as the dogs left only scraps. “This was one of the most remarkable sightings in my 20-year career as a wildlife photographer. “The chaos and intensity were overwhelming, and even after things finally calmed down, I was in disbelief.” ENDS
