Jonathan the Giant tortoise
Jonathan, the Boer War Tortoise, St Helena - 03 Dec 2008
At 176-years-old Jonathan the tortoise can lay claim to being the oldest living animal on the planet. In fact when this black and white picture of him was taken, which show Jonathan nibbling on the grass on the Island of St Helena during the Boer War, he was already around 70-year-old. He was photographed being watched by a guard and a prisoner of war around 1900, and his life has spanned eight British monarchs from George IV to Elizabeth II, and 50 prime ministers. Today Jonathan still lives on the same South Atlantic Island, along with fellow tortoises David, Speedy, Emma, Fredricka and Myrtle.
