Masumeh Ebtekar was appointed Iran's first woman vice-president by President Khatami in 1997. Chief interpreter and spokeswoman for the radical students who held the American Embassy under siege in 1979 - holding 52 diplomats hostage for 444 days - she was knicknamed "Sister Mary" by the American press. In 1981 Khatami named her chief editor of the English-language daily Kayhan International. In 2002 she was appointed head of the reformist "Women's Party of Iran". Born in 1960, Ebtekar was schooled in the United States and completed her studies in Iran with a doctorate in immunology which she currently teaches at Science University in Tehran. This year she was awarded the UN's Environmental Prize "Earth's Heroes" for her international and regional role in protecting the environment. Tehran, IRAN - May 2006. 535899
