Russian-Soviet writer and playwright Maxim Gorky (R) chats (probably in 1929 in Gorky) with Joseph Stalin, the general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party Central Committee. Gorky (1868-1936) held a variety of menial posts before becoming a writer, producing several romantic short stories, than social novels and plays, notably the drama "The Lower Depths (1902). He was was the first president of the Soviet Writers Union and a supporter of Stalinism. He died in mysterious circumstances, and may have been the victim of an anti-Soviet plot. Stalin, a Georgian Marxist revolutionary became later virtual dictator of the USSR (1928-53).
