Polish leader Wojciech Jaruzelski (C) attends the historical inaugurative session of Polish Dieta in Warsaw on July 4, 1989. This was the first multi-party session in fifty years of the Polish parliament. In the first free election in Eastern Europe for 40 years, Polish voters beat 04 July the Communist government of General Jaruzelski and Solidarity, the free trade union and democratic movement, captured one-third of seats to the lower house of Poland's parliament (the Diet).
