The Imperial State crown is carried into Parliament prior to the arrival of The Queen for the formal state opening of Parliament ceremony.

The Queen has delivered her annual speech today at the state opening of parliament. Amid the pomp and circumstance that surrounds the traditional ceremony the Queen unveiled a streamlined legislative programme that mainly focuses on the economy. "My government's overriding priority is to ensure the stability of the British economy during the global economic downturn," she said. During her speech new protection for banks and depositors was confirmed, as were plans to create incentives for the unemployed and greater support for disabled people. An aim to improve airport security and the accountability of policing was also announced, alongside new bills for coroners, border control and equality.
