US astronaut Virgil Grissom poses in spacesuit at launch complex 34 at the Kennedy Space Center, in Cap Canaveral, Florida, 12 December 1966. The crew of Apollo 1 command module, in which Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee, died when the module was destroyed by fire during a training exercise 27 January 1967. It was the first major tragedy of the US space program.
