Croatia, Osijek, 10 November 2017 55 year old Branka Reljan has schizophrenia. She spent 12 years in a psychiatric institution after her legal capacity was taken from her. In 2014 she was allowed to leave the institution and move into an apartment in Osijek, Croatia. She moved in with her partner, who she met in the institution, 45 year old Drazenko Tevelli. He spent 13 years in a psychiatric institution. He was sent there by social workers to deal with alcoholism. Since leaving the institution neither of them have had a psychic episode that required intervention from a psychiatrist. Branka and Drazenko were offered an apartment as part of a program led by the director of, ???Center For Providing Services In The Community??? in Osijek, (where they were living) Ladislav Lamza, to move beneficiaries into the community. Drazenko says ??sThe best thing about living in the apartment is that I have the freedom to come and go as I like, I don???t have to report to anyone.??? Branka says ??sIt was not a good place for recovery because you feel like you were in chains. It???s better to be hungry and free than full and chained.??? Robin Hammond / NOOR
