In mum's cradle.
DENMARK THE CUTEST baby chimp has been pictured gazing lovingly at the camera while being cradled by her mum.
Images show the adorable five-month-old chimp contentedly clinging on to mum while taking time to look around their surroundings. One image shows the baby peeking out from under mum’s arm while another shows them holding up their leg in a yoga pose.
At only five months old, the baby chimpanzee was born to mum Marti on May 15, 2024, at Copenhagen Zoo, Denmark.
Chimpanzee mothers usually give birth to one baby at a time.
The baby is carried by the mother under her belly for the first month so that the baby can be breast-fed easily.
After six to 12 months the baby starts to explore its neighbourhood more and more and makes contact with play partners, but the mother always stays very close to the little one.
After one year, the little child is carried on the mother's back, but it will take four more years before the child is weaned by its mother Once weaned the mother will get pregnant again, the cycle taking around five years.
These adorable images were captured by a British Wildlife photographer, Helen Black (63).
“I have waited a lifetime for a picture like this as this was my first view of such a small chimp so close up,” she told mediadrumworld.com.
“Having never seen a baby chimp so close I loved watching her as she followed what her Mum was doing.
“Her mother was partaking in an enrichment activity where she was using a stick to dip into concealed tubs of food to get it, showing her intelligence and manual dexterity.
“I was fascinated by just how clever chimps are at using tools as there are only a handful of species that can do this.”
