November 3, 2023 - Bangkok. Angkhana Neelapaijit stands inside the grounds of Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. Angkhana Neelaphaijit is a renowned Thai human rights activist, a former Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, a member of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearance and the wife of disappeared human rights lawyer Somchai Neelaphaijit. In March 2004 her husband was abducted in central Bangkok and never seen again whilst he was defending a group men from the South of Thailand who were arrested on terrorism charges and claimed they were tortured in police custody. Those involved in the adduction were never charged with anything more than coercion and robbery as the body of Somchai Neelapaijit was never found. Since then Angkhana has worked tirelessly for justice for her husband and her family and also for those who have been victims of rights violations. She was awarded the 2019 Magsaysay Award for her contribution towards human rights work in Thailand.
