A whale breaches creating a pair of “angel wings” in the spray. The humpback whale was spotted just off the coast of Racecourse Beach, New South Wales, Australia. Firefighter Tim Burgess, 32, said, “During the early months of the migration the whales are often further out at sea. When they begin the journey back down to the Arctic they travel in close with their newborn calves to keep them safe. Creating the perfect opportunity to capture photographs of them. “ “It is often discussed why whales breach. Some believe it is for gaining attention to mate, self-care or simply because it is fun. Juvenile whales are often much more playful in the water. It’s fascinating to watch their behaviour as it mirrors that of human children where they have so much energy to play whilst their parents are much slower, but always close by.” “Whales for me are one of the most special animals on earth. No matter how many times you see them, they always give you the "wow" factor. Their grace and beauty is something I strive to document in the hope it raises more awareness in helping protect these animals from poachers.” Please byline: Tim Burgess/Solent News © Tim Burgess/Solent News & Photo Agency UK +44 (0) 2380 458800
