FILE-- William Borders, right, on the job in Afghanistan as a foreign correspondent for The New York Times in December 1977. Borders, who rose from copy boy to senior editing positions at the Times over a 46-year career, was found dead at home in Manhattan on March 1, 2018. He was 79. (The New York Times)
