Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan (1985-16/07/89) conducting an German orchestra 1950 in Berlin. Karajan was made in 1955 principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic and it is with this orchestra that he was mainly associated until his resignation in 1989. He was also artistic director of the Salzburg Festival (1956-60) and of the Salzburg Easter Festival (from 1967).
