Wreck of "USS Scorpion" (SSN-589) - The Defense Department released this picture in Washington , January 1969, and said it was taken by rescue ship "USNS Mizar" (T-AGOR-11) on Oct. 29, 1968 when the missing submarine "USS Scorpion" (SSN-589) was found on the Atlantic Ocean floor 10,000 feet deep, some 400 miles southwest of the Azores. The department said the large oval opening at center, on the after section of the vessel, is the stowage bay where the messenger buoy is stored. A mooring line protrudes from its stowage locker into the buoy cavity. The department said other objects visible are cicular main ballast tank vents, two rectangular access hatches into the superstructure and damaged snorkel exhaust piping.
