Akuwom Atiir, around age 20, at home in Kachemeri village, Loima sub-county, Turkana, Kenya on 18 October 2017. Akuwom lost one child to pneumonia last year. Her daughter, Adekei Akokote, 1, pictured here, was diagnosed with pneumonia in August. When Akokote had difficulty breathing, Akuwom took her immediately to Turkwel dispensary, but there were no nurses available due to the nursing strike. Akuwom knew her child needed medical attention quickly; her other child had died within a day of first symptoms. She was transferred to Lodwar in an ambulance, borrowing money from a friend to cover the 850 shillings (?8 USD) in fees. The family makes and sells charcoal, but the income from this isn't enough to cover the family's needs. "It's difficult to get food, at times we sleep hungry," Akuwom said. She receives relief food (sorghum) once a month.
