FILE-- An MRI machine at Priority Private Care, in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, April 19, 2018. On the way to their MRIs, patients drive by an average of six other places where the procedure could have been done more cheaply, a study suggests. A body of research -- including randomized studies -- shows that people do in fact cut back on care when they have to spend more for it. The problem is that they don't cut only wasteful care. They also forgo the necessary kind. (Kholood Eid for The New York Times)
