The world's most famous physicist, who is almost completely paralysed by motor neurone disease, has posted a job advert on his website for a technical assistant. A major part of the L25,000 job will be maintaining his unique electric wheelchair and voice synthesiser, which are one-of-a-kind and have no instruction manual. Hawking, who celebrates his 70th birthday next month, has spent nearly 40 years in a wheelchair, which has been specially built and adapted for him. He has near complete paralysis but retains enough muscle control to allow him to press a button with his right hand. A computer screen then displays a series of icons that allow control of his wheelchair, doors and appliances, such as the television, in his Cambridge home.
