6 February 2004 - New York City - The Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest remaining house in Manhattan. The mansion is located in upper Manhattan on 160th street in an area that used to be called Mt. Morris. It was built in 1765. During the Revolutionary War George Washington used the house as his headquarters because it was on top of a hill where he could see a large part of the island. The house was bought by Stephen Jumel, who was a wealthy French ship owner in 1810. The Jumel's spent many years in France and were know for their sympathy for Napoleon. Eliza, Stephen's wife, furnished the house in the French Empire style and to this day is being restored with hand crafted French wall paper made by hand from wooden block prints as seen here in these photographs. The wall paper is being installed by a company called WRN Associates that has done restoration for for other buildings such as the White House in Washington, D.C. The wall paper is made by a company in France called Mauny. WRN Associates has a team of people who fly in from all around the country to work on special projects such at the Morris-Jumel Mansion.
