The former director of investigations of the Buenos Aires police, Miguel Etchecolatz (C), arrives for the opening hearings of his trial on abduction, torture and murder charges for his role during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship, the first such trial ever in Argentina, 20 June 2006 in La Plata. Etchecolatz, who refused to testify, is already under house arrest, serving a 23-year sentence on charges that include crimes against humanity and stealing the baby of one of the regime's victims, a crime not included in the amnesties. Up to 30,000 military regime opponents were killed or disappeared from custody during Argentina's "dirty war," according to human rights groups.
