The Villa of Mysteries features some of the best-preserved frescoes in the remains of Pompeii and is classed as a Unesco World Heritage Site. However, its neglect meant that Italy faced losing this status along with EU funding. The government were issued with a deadline by the European Union deadline to spend ?105 million (GBP 76 million) by the end of the year for maintenance and restoration projects in Pompeii.
