Pope Francis stands in the private library in the apostolic palace at the Vatican on November 13, 2014. The split in the Church is there and it is strong. A group of conservative cardinal clashed with Pope Francis. The high-ranking conservative prelates are the U.S cardinal Raymond Burke, the German cardinals Gerhard Ludwig Muller and Walter Brandmuller and the two italian cardinals Carlo Caffarra and Velasio de Paolis. Recently Cardinal Raymond Burke said the church 'is like a ship without a rudder' under Francis. Speculation concerning possible changes in Catholic teaching and practice on marriage, divorce, and annulments has run rampant in past months, with some pushing for a streamlining of the annulment process and others insisting that Communion be given to divorced and remarried Catholics. In an attempt to stem the tide of change, these five important cardinals have laid out their opposing arguments in a book titled 'Remaining in the Truth of Christ: Marriage and Communion in the Catholic Church'. They also maintain the hardline, traditional Catholic approach that homosexuals are 'intrinsically disordered' and that the act of gay sex is a sin. Photo by Eric Vandeville/ABACAPRESS.COM
