03171950 JOHN W. DERRY OF THE ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION DISPLAYING the newly developed low-priced geiger counter TO SENATORS JOHN W. BRICKER, BRIEN MCMAHON AND WILLIAM F. KNOWLAND IN WASHINGTON. CREDIT: GEORGE TAMES/THE NEW YORK TIMES WASHINGTON BUREAU Published 04-16-2010: From left, John W. Derry of the Atomic Energy Commission showed Senators John W. Bricker, Brien McMahon and William F. Knowland a Geiger counter in 1950. Documents from the era show concern about a nuclear attack that is akin to fears now. (George Tames/The New York Times) Published Correction: 04/20/2010 A picture caption on Friday with a Washington Memo article, comparing the concerns over nuclear attacks during the cold war with the fear of terrorist attacks today, reversed the identities of two of the three senators shown observing a Geiger counter demonstration in Washington in 1950. The senators, from left, were: John W. Bricker, William F. Knowland and Brien McMahon -- not Brien McMahon and William F. Knowland. Numerous readers alerted The Times to the error, which was traced to the original picture in the newspaper's archives. The incorrect identities also appeared in some copies on March 18, 1950.
