PUBLISHED CAPTION: 9/6/87 - sack 74722 - The most formal element in Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux's elegant and picturesque design for Central Park is the Bethesda Fountain, at 72nd Street, a grand terrace facing a lake. The terrace, which is the culmination of a promenade extending several blocks south, was completed in 1869, with the fountain's elaborate statue installed four years later. In recent years, the site had fallen on hard times, defaced by graffiti and worn by decades of use. Shortly before summer, the fountain reopened after an extensive and careful refurbishing, the detailed stonework and carvings by Jacob Wrey Mould cleaned, the steps reset, the surrounding lawns reseeded.
