An unidentified detective looks at the body of Langley Collyer, 61-year-old recluse, April 8, 1947, after a layer of four feet of rubbish had been cleared away following the discovery of the missing man, in the same room of the ancient mansion on upper Fifth Avenue in New York in which the body of his blind brother, Homer, was found on March 21. It was believed by police that Langley was the victim of one of the numerous booby traps he had scattered around the building. Parts of the body had been gnawed by rats. This fact led police to think that he had died before Homer. (AP Photo/Jacob Harris)
