When prohibition agents raided a huge barn on the farm of J. Thomas Benston, Pierce County road maintenance foreman, near Tacoma, Washington, July 17, 1931, they seized one of the largest stills ever taken in the Pacific Northwest. They valued the moon shining machinery at $50,000. The still was capable of producing 100 gallons of high test alcohol an hour. Two sons of Benston, David and William, were arrested. The photo shows one of the huge 7,500 gallon vats used to prepare the mash for the still. Several similar and smaller vats were confiscated. A truck load of sugar was used to prepare the 7,500 gallons of mash in the vat. Agents said the still had been operation more than six months and would have been moved within a week as preparations were being made to dismantle it after the mash in the vats had been distilled.
