AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
After a successful South Pacific patrol job, this U.S. submarine surfaced at an unnamed port for an overhaul, Feb. 9, 1943. Members of the crew test the mechanism of a deck gun which had acquired some rust and a growth of moss. The small flags on the conning tower are the epitaphs of four Japanese ships resting somewhere at the bottom of the sea. (AP Photo)
