The New York City administration pressed forward on April 4, 1934 in its effort to purge Welfare Island of graft and corruption among its indigent and penal wards with the arrest of Louis J. McNally, former superintendent of the City Home for Dependents. McNally, who dropped from sight when the spotlight if investigation was turned on the Island Home, was accused at recent public hearings of having accumulated $84,000 during a period of eight years on a salary of $28,000. McNally, who had been in New Jersey, is shown here (right) after he had been taken into custody on April 4, 1934 by defective John C. Leffler when he attempted to visit a friend in New York. The arrest was made in the subway. (AP Photo)
