AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
White and Negro students read and study together on Nov. 9, 1956 in the Louisville public library, an unusual sight in most sections of the South. This is one way in which Louisville has broken down segregation in a gradual move that began 18 years ago. Many farsighted persons have been responsible for the change. They have worked hard to bring the people of Louisville around to their way of thinking. As a result, the city?s schools integrated peacefully last September. Earlier, segregation was eliminated in swimming pools, restaurants, public parks and other places. Only minor objections have been raised against integration in the Kentucky city, principally from local white citizen councils. (AP Photo/HBL)
