AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
These shelterbelt trees, June 14, 1938 are three years old, part of the planting of 1935, which saw 200,000,000 trees set out in the straggling, 100-mile wide, 1,000-mile long barricade. Note how trees on the outer edges of this cluster are smaller than those in the center. The stunted trees have born the brunt of hot winds during the last few years and once were almost devoured by grasshoppers. Shelter belt work now is done by landowners, under government supervision-the government?s own planting project having been abandoned. (AP Photo)
