These sticks and knobkerries were only part of the thousands found at a hostel near Lamontville, on the outskirts of Durban, South Africa on April 6, 1960, when police raided the hostel which houses 4,500 African labourers. The assaulted labourers insisting on going to work. The agitators took control of the hostel on Monday. Heavily armed police, supported by Saracens and armoured cars, repossessed the hostel without firing a shot of injuring anyone. (AP Photo)
