President Franklin D. Roosevelt is shown on the platform of his train at Highland, N.Y., across the river from Poughkeepsie, as he started his return trip to Washington on the evening of November 7, 1934. Elated by the Democratic victories, the report of which had been given him at his Hyde Park home during his brief rest there, the president started back to the White House almost immediately to take up several pressing administration problems. Even though he declined to comment on the election result, his elation was obvious when he boarded the train. (AP Photo)
