Jan Nowak returned to Poland on Tuesday, August 29, 1989 after 45 years in exile. The 76 year old staunch anti-communist left Poland in 1944 as a courier for the Polish Home Army with news of a failed uprising in Warsaw. He ran the Polish desk of Radio Free Europe for 14 years and is due to address the National Assembly at the invitation of Solidarity. Nowak will attend a 50th anniversary ceremony marking the German invasion to be held in Gdansk Friday. (AP Photo)
