This is a scene from the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee April 7, 1862, as depicted by artist Thure de Thulstrup. Although the Union forces as painted here behind the cannon appear well-dressed, the truth was that most of the soldiers on both sides in the western campaigns were hastily recruited, untrained and ill-clothed, with many barefoot. Some 25,000 men were killed or wounded in the Battle of Shiloh. (AP Photo)
