Lincoln Ellsworth, veteran explorer, and Bernt Balchen, right, noted aviator, shown beside the new monoplane in which they will make a 2,900-mile flight over the Antarctic regions. The plane's motor was tuned up for the first time on Oct. 18, 1932 at the Los Angeles Municipal Airport, and the entire plane was inspected by the two adventurers. The craft was constructed under the supervision of Balchen at a cost of $35,000. It has a cruising range of 3,600 miles. (AP Photo)
