Pilots John Glenn, left, of the Marines, and Charles Demmler of the Navy, will fly a pair of F8FU Crusader Jets from Long Beach, Calif. to Floyd Bennett Field in New York, July 15, 1957, Long Beach, Calif. They will leave from Los Alamitos Naval Air Station at Long Beach and hope to record the first supersonic coast-to-coast flight in history. To span the nation faster than the space of sound, they'll have to make the trip in no more than 3 hours and 14 minutes. The distance is 2,460 miles. (AP Photo/Charles W. Harrity)
