Workmen put finishing touches on the assembly of the famous Iwo Jima statue, which will stand on a Virginia bluff overlooking the Potomac River, a huge bronze memorial to the Marine Corps, Sept. 16, 1954, Washington, D.C. The 100-ton statue models the celebrated photograph of the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi in World War II and is the work Felix De Weldon, sculptor.
