Workmen put finishing touches on the assembly of the famous Iwo Jima statue, which will stand on a Virginia bluff overlooking the Potomac River, a huge bronze memorial to the Marine Corps, Sept. 16, 1954, Washington, D.C. The 100-ton statue models the celebrated photograph of the raising of the American flag on Mt. Suribachi in World War II and is the work Felix De Weldon, sculptor. Located near Arlington National Cemetery, the statue towers above Washington where the Capitol and Washington Monument can be seen in the background. (AP Photo)
