Ingrid Bergman was called back to the stage ten times after playing the role of St. Joan in Arthur Honneger's "St. Joan at the stake" at La Scala, Milan, April 21, 1954. Her first appearance in the non-singing opera role was at the San Carlo theatre in Naples last year. Stage director of the performance was Roberto Rossellini, Ingrid's husband. He also was called to the stage. Photo shows Ingrid Bergman as she gets a congratulatory kiss from her husband after the La Scala performance of April 21. In one hand he holds a manacle used in the opera. In the other he holds a walking stick which he has been using since a recent fall at La Scala. (AP Photo)
