Thomas's holding action at Snodgrass Hill, covering the retreat of the Union Army of the Cumberland in the Battle of Chickamauga fought on Sept. 19 and 20, 1863 near Chickamauga Creek, in northern Georgia, about 12 miles south of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
