This is an aerial view of the Brooklyn Bridge spanning the East River in New York City, 1923. The bridge measures 6,016 feet from one end to the other, including approaches. To accomodate the passage of ships, the clearance at the center of the bridge rises to 135 feet, a height that became standard for bridge construction. The bridge was opened to traffic on May 24, 1883. Part of the Manhattan Bridge can be seen at top left in Brooklyn. (AP Photo)
