Philo T. Farnsworth, San Francisco-based inventor of the electric television, poses in New York, Dec. 9, 1930. Farnsworth fought a long, bitter battle against electronics giant RCA, eventually winning the patent war in the 1930s, but RCA's corporate clout eventually pushed Farnsworth out of television before he could profit from his invention. He later faced bankruptcy, depression, drinking and illness before dying in 1971 in Salt Lake City. (AP Photo)
