Former Gov. Kirk Fordice, a Republican, is shown in Jackson, Miss., Aug. 20, 2001. Fordice, who in 1992 became the first Republican since Reconstruction to be elected governor of Mississippi, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia. Fordice confirmed his illness on Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004. From 1992-2000, Fordice served as the first Republican governor elected since Reconstruction. In 1996, he became the first Mississippi governor to succeed himself. Fordice died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2004 of leukemia. He was 70.
