Pope John Paul II and Nicaraguan President Violeta Chamorro kiss after the pontiff arrived in Managua, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1996. On Wednesday, the beaming president, a cross dangling from her necklace, twice kissed the pope's face _ once as he arrived and once as he attended a reception at her office. It's rare for anybody to kiss the Pope's face, Papal spokesman Joaquin Navarro said adding it was the first time he knew of any female head of state doing so. John Paul didn't seem to mind.
