California's Golden Bears, collegiate crew champions of the United States during their famous finish rush to win the eight-oared Summer Olympic championship August 13, 1932 for a second successive Olympiad in Los Angeles They rowed down a great University of Pisa crew from Italy by a margin of inches, covering the 2000-meter course at Long Beach, Cal., Aug 13, 1932 in 6 minutes, 37 3/5 seconds, 1/5 of a second ahead of the Italians. Canada, third, and Great Britain, fourth, made it a blanket finish,trailing less than a boat length behind the winner. In this picture the bow of the California shell in the foreground has just crossed the finish line, slightly ahead of the Italian boat on the far side of the course.
