Guests of the Harry Payne Whitneys 'tripped the light fantastic' in this 45-foot-ceiling ballroom in New York on April 24, 1942, said to be the largest private ballroom in the country. Shown is only part of the great room with its massive tapestries and paintings. Hanging in this room is Gainsborough's "The Woodman's Return," which the artist presented to his physician, Dr. Chorlton, of Bath, England. Also here is a Brussels Renaissance tapestry screen, circa 1600. (AP Photo/Anthony Camerano)
