Glad to have a King back on the throne again, the people of Athens welcomed King George of Greece with tumultuous greeting on November 25. The King landed at the naval port of Phaleron and drove along the Boulevard to Athens. At Hadrian's arch, the gates of ancient Athens, the king was challenged by the Evzones, or guards, and stepping from his car he replied "I am the King of the Hellenes". The crowd surged round him, and he could hardly make his way back to the car. The drive was made in an open car, and the king was accompanied by his brother, Prince Paul. There was an escort of police cars. Evzones, kilted members of the royal bodyguard, keeping back the enthusiastic crowds at Hadrian's arch as the crowd waited for the return of their monarch to Athens on Nov. 25, 1935. (AP Photo)
