Jim Thorpe, famous backfield star of the Carlisle Indian School 40 years ago, has been named the greatest football star of the half century in the Associated Press Mid Century Poll of the nation's sportswriters and sportscasters. Thorpe getting off a kick during his playing days, during the peak of his career in 1911-1912. Thorpe starred in every branch of sport when he attended the old Carlisle Indian School at Carlisle, Pa. In the 1912 Olympics he was crowned the world's greatest athlete for winning both the Decathlon and Pentathlon championships. (AP Photo)
