Afganistan - Nimroz - Vu Images
Afghanistan, Nimroz, Zaranj, 04 August 2017 A drug addict tries to sleep through illness soon after sunrise, in an abandoned public toilet, a block behind the main traffic circle in Zaranj. The majority of addicts I spoke to said they had become addicted in Iran before being deported back to Afghanistan. Most claimed they had started smoking drugs to ease physical or mental pain or because they'd been forced to by employers who wanted to keep their workers under not only their control but that of the addictive substances. Other say they started because friends were smoking it. There are two government run drug rehabilitation facilities in Zaranj; one for men and one for women. Together they can handle no more than 100 patients. Another privately funded clinic was built and is run on funds donated by a wealthy local trader named Sediq Nazari, or Haji Nazir, and has 500 beds. Andrew Quilty / Agence VU
